John Walters was born in Bronxville, New York and raised in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. John graduated from Drake University in 1984 with a degree in Journalism.

John started part-time at KCCI-TV in 1982 and moved into a full-time position upon his graduation. In June 1996, John was hired as Sports Director at ABC5.

In 2001, John and the ABC5 News Sports team were recognized by the Iowa High School Athletic Association for their coverage of high school sports, including their half-hour high school football show "The Friday Night Blitz."

In 2003, John was hired as the radio play-by-play announcer of the Iowa State Cyclones. He also hosts the "Paul Rhoads Show" and the "Fred Hoiberg Show," on ABC5 as well as, the call-in shows on the Learfield Cyclone Radio Network. John has been named "Iowa Sportscaster of the Year" in the 2003 and 2005.

John and his wife, Joni, have three daughters, Kate, Annie and Kelli.
