Police followed footprints in the snow, but then they lost track. So three men behind a Des Moines shooting are on the run.
Two duplexes were taped off Monday evening after a man was shot in the torso. Witnesses told police three men came to the front door at 3422 SW 42nd St. And when the man opened it, he was shot.
Witnesses also said the men drove off in a car parked in the nearby Weston Park apartments.
"We're no longer searching," said Lt. Tony Knox of the Des Moines Police Department. "We had some tracks that we followed, but we didn't come up with anything from following the tracks so right now, no, we're not searching."
The victim was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. Police aren't identifying the victim or releasing a possible motive for the shooting at this time.
An adult female and the victim's daughter were in the home at the time. They are ok.
Neighbors and police said this area doesn't see a lot of crime.
"It actually was quiet until now. I never had any problems," said D.J. Wasko, who lives two doors down from where the shooting happened. "People kind of kept to themselves."
"I've been on third watch for a while and you don't hear too many trips actually come out in this particular area," Knox said.
