It was definitely a mess Thursday morning.  We woke up to about a foot of snow in some areas of the metro and that has caused a lot of problems out on the roads.

Early Thursday, the roads were almost impassable.  The heavy snow and ice made driving extremely difficult.

We saw many cars stranded on the side of the road and collisions on the interstates and the residential areas were worse.

The Iowa State Patrol advised people to stay off the roads if you didn't have to be out.

"The snow's been blowing back over and we get a lot of semis go up and they can't make it up the ramps and they get stuck in that area.  We're seeing a lot of cars go into ditches and spinouts and into the concrete barriers on the interstate.  It 's terrible, travel is not good, we recommend people stay home unless it's an emergency to get out," says Sgt. Scott Bright from the Iowa State Patrol.
