If you shipped a package via FedEx Monday, you helped the shipping giant break a record. FedEx expected to ship more than 19 million packages on one day alone.
"Very busy. Very, very busy," says Tom Jackson, Center Manager for the Clive FedEx Office location.
FedEx says the 19 million packages will be the most they've ever handled in one day.
"Wow! I was going to ship yesterday. I guess I'm part of the millions," said West Des Moines resident David Gerbauer.
The company says more and more people are shopping online...and more are becoming increasingly comfortable with shipping Christmas gifts.
"We're used to this time of year," says Jackson. "And everything will go out like normal, and everything's working well."
Jackson's FedEx location saw a steady stream of customers Monday. Many of them shipping gifts.
"Well, I'm shipping a couple items to friends around the country," said DeSoto resident Gene Nosco. "I've got some sporting goods here, just trying to get in early."
With Christmas only a couple weeks away, FedEx is working virtually around the clock to get those gifts under the tree where they belong.
"We're really good at forecasting what our volume is going to be, so we did bring in a few extra people," said Jackson.
And those few extra people made a difference at this location.
"I didn't have to wait in line," said Gerbauer. "Not bad for the busiest day."
Not bad at all for the more than 300,000 FedEx workers, who will handle a record-breaking 280 million packages this holiday season.
FedEx also wants to remind customers if they ship by ground, they need to drop off packages by December 17th to arrive by Christmas, and if they ship express, those packages need to be dropped off by the 22nd.
