DES MOINES—The Powerball Jackpot has now stepped into historic territory, $425 million dollars is up for grabs.
"It really gets exciting when the jackpot gets this big and then all of the sudden it has been built up to the biggest jackpot in Powerball history, so it is going to be nuts," said Terry Rich, CEO of the Iowa Lottery.
Could Iowa get lucky again? After hitting the Powerball jackpot twice this year? Well folks around the metro hope so.
"Yea I hope I got the big one," said one Des Moines resident.
Strong sales over the holiday weekend caused this jackpot to jump $100 million in a matter of days. Then with no winner from Saturday night's drawing the dollar amount began to rise quickly.
"It has been building at about $10 million a clip and then all the sudden, bam, over the weekend it went up $100 million dollars," said Rich.
And it could go up even higher. Fifty percent of all tickets sold fatten up the jackpot, and those numbers sure have got people dreaming.
"I'd invest it and then I would move somewhere and not tell anyone," said a Des Moines man who picked up two tickets.
The previous top Powerball prize was $365 million and that was won in 2006 by a group of workers in our neighboring state of Nebraska.
