Primate Sanctuary Scientist Reinstated

A scientist at an ape sanctuary in Des Moines has been reinstated to the staff after a two-month investigation has found the animals are well cared for and allegations made by former workers are unsubstantiated.

Sue Savage-Rumbaugh is again the resident scientist at the Iowa Primate Sanctuary, a facility once known as the Great Ape Trust. She had been placed on administrative leave in September after 12 former employees expressed concerns about the safety and welfare of the bonobos at the facility.

An investigation by a committee of the group's board found the assertions unproven.

The board voted on Tuesday to reinstate Savage-Rumbaugh.

The sanctuary last week passed a USDA inspection and hopes to receive an exhibitor's license soon to allow public visits.
