A fire destroyed a house in St. Charles Monday afternoon.  Luckily no one was inside at the time.

Firefighters got the call around 4 p.m., and when they arrived, the home on 2412 Valleyview Ave. was engulfed in flames.

More than a dozen emergency vehicles from four different departments responded to the fire.
Whoever lived in the house was not home when the fire broke out.

"Upon arrival we had heavy smoke, heavy fire showing." said Truro Asst. Fire Chief Joe Sciarrotta. "I think our biggest problem we had this time was time of day and the location...just nobody around.  We had kind of a late notice.  The fire was pretty well ahead of us by the time we got here.  We were able to make an attack and save a little bit of the house, but it does look like it's going to be a total loss right now."

An eyewitness told us he first saw smoke about 2:45 p.m., but because he didn't live near the house, he thought it was a controlled burn.

Fire officials don't yet know what caused the fire, but will be investigating.
