Some Ankeny parents are charged with allegedly keeping their two adopted children locked in a basement for several weeks.

DHS started investigating this case in September, after one of the teens told a worker at their school.

Police arrested 45 year old Paul Drake and his wife 44 year old JoAnn Drake for locking their children in the basement and fed them under a door. The couple has been charged with false imprisonment and neglect or abandonment of a dependant person.

The 13 year old girl and 14 year old boy claim they were locked in the home's basement for three to four weeks, anytime they weren't in school - that's including the weekends.

Ankeny P.D. did a limited investigation starting October 5th and now the case is being handled by the DHS.

"You have to ask all the questions that a normal person would ask.  What happened in this case or any case?  What's the history?  What's the risks and safety of the child?  It's pretty straight forward," says Roger Munns from the Department of Human Services.

He says the two teenagers have been removed from the home and are now in safe hands.
