The Iowa State Patrol has confirmed that one man is dead following a car and train collision around 8 p.m. Monday in Boone.
A car going northbound on Highway 17 went through the flashing railroad crossing gates, and became wedged between two Union Pacific rail cars. That car was dragged for about a quarter-mile until it became dislodged and the mangled wreck ended up on a gravel road.
Only one person was in the car and his body has been extricated. His name is not being released at this time.
The Iowa State Patrol took over the investigation from Boone P.D. and the Boone County Sheriff's Office. A trooper on the scene said they believe the driver was going at a high rate of speed when he went around the crossing arms.
The train conductor realized that the collision occurred and stopped farther down the tracks.
