Early School Dismissals Expected Thursday - ABC5 News Des Moines, IA

Parents-- make some time in Thursday's schedule in case you need to pick your kids early from school. Some school officials think Thursday's heat could mean early dismissals.
"No other way to put it - it's warm," said Brad Anderson, Woodward-Granger Community School superintendent.
Granger's private school and more than half of their district's public schools do not have air conditioning. Some classrooms can even reach more than 92 degrees, which makes school a tough place to concentrate.
"When it is warm, [kids] get tired and they struggle to pay attention and so it's better off to just get out early and just be on the safe side," said Herb Hartman, Assumption Catholic School principal.
Many Iowa districts still use older buildings and it's hard to justify spending the money to install an AC they'd only turn on a few weeks out of the year.
"Teachers really have to plan their activities accordingly," said Anderson.
Teachers give water breaks and move class to whatever part of the school might be air conditioned.
If the temps get too high, they have to let them out and hope the rooms will cool off by the next school day.
