DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Political rivals have framed a crowded and competitive fight in the June primary, setting up heated contests for the state's top two offices.
Then state's filing deadline passed at 5 p.m. on Friday with few surprises.
All of the state's U.S. congressional representatives will face a challenger in this election cycle, as will U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley.
Three Republicans will battle for the right to challenge Gov. Chet Culver.
Both parties will fight for control of a legislature where both chambers are controlled by Democrats.
Democrats control the House on a 56-44 margin, and the Senate on a margin of 32-18.
Parties can nominate candidates during state conventions in races where they haven't fielded a candidate.
Iowa will hold its primary election on June 8.
