Reporting Period:  October 1, 2008 - September 15, 2009

Station(s) in Station Employment Unit:  WOI-DT, Ames/Des Moines, IA

Appendix 3: Outreach Initiatives

1.  Internship Program:

Through the years, WOI has been involved in helping members of the community achieve their educational goals.  WOI recruits students interested in the broadcast industry by widely advertising our internship programs at career fairs and by educating managers to mention this opportunity when speaking with members of the community.  Letters of Agreement are filled out by the prospective intern and signed off on by a professor of the university and an evaluation is performed at the end of the intern's term.  During this period, we have had a total of seven internships at WOI.  One reporting intern from Harding University; four weather interns from Iowa State University; and two sports interns from Drake University - whom we hired.

2.  EEO Training:

Equal Employment Opportunity Meetings are held periodically to educate department heads regarding their roles and responsibilities in the EEO process and to ensure that all departments are hiring and promoting in a non-discriminatory fashion.  We require all managers with hiring authority to participate in these meetings and in discussions regarding upcoming job fairs and other recruitment activities.  Minutes of these meetings are kept in the business office's EEO file.

3.  Job Bank & Internet Program Participation:

WOI participates in job banks and internet programs with many organizations, as outlined above in italics, including the Illinois Broadcaster's Assoc., Iowa Broadcaster's Assoc., Iowacareer.net, Iowa Workforce Development, etc.  These organizations have programs designed for outreach generally, and are not primarily directed to providing notification of specific job vacancies.  (See italicized recruitment sources on above list.)

4.  Participation in Career Fairs:

  • Iowa Career Expo - January 8, 2009, 10 am - 3 pm

Teresa Fuquey (Business Manager, ABC5), Kelly Beeck (National Sales Manager, ABC5), Kevin McCarthy (Sales Promotions Coordinator, ABC5), and Doug Sawyer (Promotions Manager, ABC5) participated.  The career fair was sponsored by the Central Iowa SHRM and the Des Moines Register/CareerBuilder for the general public.  WOI was recruiting for a Creative Services Director as well as taking resumes for internships.

  • Kaplan University Career Fair  - March 12, 2009, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Kelly Beeck (National Sales Manager, ABC5) participated.  Local college held career fair for their students, alumni and general public.  WOI was taking resumes for internships.

  • Kaplan University Career Fair - August 13, 2009, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm

Teresa Fuquey (Business Manager, ABC5) participated.  Local college held career fair for students, alumni and the general public.  WOI was recruiting for a Local Account Executive, as well as taking resumes for internships.

5.  Disseminating Information as to Employment Opportunities in Broadcasting:

WOI created a television spot which airs approximately every day on different day parts, on both 5.1 and our digital channel 5.2.  The spot: 1) asks organizations that distribute information about employment opportunities to contact WOI to get on our mailing list (all contact information including address, phone and email are provided) and 2) informs job seekers to check WOI's website for postings of current openings.  The spot confirms WOI is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

6.   Participate in event or program related to career opportunities in broadcasting sponsored by educational institutions:

  • November 3, 2008 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to a meteorology class at Iowa State University.    He discussed the profession of a broadcast meteorologist and what his job responsibilities are.  The college students were able to ask questions about weather and careers in meteorology.

  • February 11, 2009 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to Horizon Elementary students in Johnston.  There were classes of 2nd and 7th graders that he spoke to about becoming a meteorologist and how weather impacts their lives.  The students were able to ask questions about weather and his career in television.
  • February 17, 2009 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to Central Elementary students in Nevada.  His weather talks were to grades 1-4 and included being a meteorologist and severe weather safety.  The students were able to ask questions about weather and his career in television.

  • March 30, 2009 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to 2nd graders at Van Meter Elementary regarding his job as a meteorologist and weather in general.  The students were able to ask questions about weather and his career.

  • May 4, 2009 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to classes of 2nd and 5th graders at St. Francis School in Des Moines about weather in general and his career as a meteorologist.  The students were able to ask questions about these topics as well.

  • May 19, 2009 - Chris Maiers (Weekend Meteorologist, ABC5) spoke to classes of high school and middle school students at I-35 Schools in Truro regarding his career as a meteorologist and what his job responsibilities were.  The topics included everything from research to operations of weather.  The students were able to ask questions regarding his career and weather.

7.    Establishing a mentoring program for station personnel:

  • WOI helps current personnel achieve their career goals.  During the period we had an opening for a Primary News Anchor and we promoted our Weekend Anchor/Photojournalist to this position.  We then promoted a current Photojournalist to the open Weekend Anchor/Photojournalist position.
